Some Days Some Arts 2023
In 2023, Some Days Some Arts truly took off. With the experience of the previous year to guide us, we made small changes to the organization of the festival, which ensured a smoother, and rewarding experience. Still, with a surge in participants, we faced new challenges and learning curves. The full house granted plenty of creativity flowing free, and the workshops left our participants enthusiastic. In 2023, we had workshops of analogue photography, carpet making, cyanotype printing, wool processing, zine making, capoeira, tango, weaving, and wood working.
Workshops
Analog photography
This documentation workshop brought together different roles of the festival, being a participant and, at the same time, creating the memories and documentation material. Ellen introduced the participants to the challenges and pecks of analogue photography and how to turn limitations into a friend.

Capoeira
Every day, early in the morning, everyone was welcome to join in an open-air capoeira class. From basic movements, to handstands and jumps, this workshop was a great way to wake up and get the blood pumping!

Catching Stories
Bernd and Bianca’s workshop “Catching Stories” united personal stories, carpet making and community. The participants were led in creating symbols that related to their experience of Calcinaia and SDSA, and weaving them into a carpet. During the weaving, stories were exchanged, and stronger community ties were built.

Ephemerality On The Spot
In their workshop, Patrick and Simone taught us how to use cyanotype prints as a medium to play with material that we found around the farm, using the sunlight to create “pictures” of ephemeral compositions.

Follow The Thread
Lisa and Raven combined their knowledge on woolspinning and plant-dyeing in this workshop. Over two weeks, they led the group throughout the whole process: from visiting a closeby sheep farm to gather wool, to collecting plants, to cleaning, natural dyeing, carding, and spinning the wool into a long colorful thread that connected all the various exhibition spaces during the final party.

Pages That Matter
„Pages that Matter“ was a zine-making workshop, where participants could learn how to fold an A4 paper into a zine, and were encouraged to fill it with collages, writings, and stories. The little booklets soon became shrines of personal expression and made for a perfect object to remember the festival by.

Tango
This workshop was all about passion and connection. The tango workshop given by Michela and Giuseppe was a great moment to move our bodies, make connection with someone well-known or just met, and also to have something to show off at the festival party.

Reuse, Reworth
Jiwoo guided the participants in weaving with recycled materials, such as strips of plastic bags. Using what would otherwise turn into trash, this workshop taught the participants how to create framed woven art, and discussed sustainability through up-cycling.

Thijme’s Teapots
Thijme has a special interest in teapots, but what is a teapot? What is the history of teapots and can you make one yourself? This workshop provided answers, and brought up new questions. The result was a collection of unique and mystical handmade ceramic teapots, which the public could enjoy through a walk in one of the abandoned buildings on the farm.

Woodworking
During this workshop, the participants created wooden signs to set around the farm’s most well-known spaces. The traces of that afternoon are still visible today in Calcinaia.
